URBAN PARK
Brief : Generate ideas for future development of a 5500 ha park. The project will address a number of general principles and cover broad social, economic and environmental considerations.
Location : Werstern Sydney Parklands, Sydney
Organised by : Western Sydney Parklands
Date : 2005 (International Competition)
Team : Frank Minnaërt + Mark Gazy Architects

The competition provides an opportunity to rethink the problem of city sprawl and develop a global reflection on the urban phenomenon.

i n f r a s t r u c t u r e:
Existing roads of the surrounding area are extended into the park.
New roads are proposed along the east and west edges.
Creation of nodes for interconnection of different transportation such as bus stops, car parking, bicycle and solar buggy retails…

b u i l d i n g s:
Buildings are proposed along the east and west boundaries to create a defined / solid edge to the park. Density increases from the existing suburbs to the parks edge to form a transition. These new zones will allow for possible future growth and provide a diversity of users to the park. This increase revenue will allow investment back into the community.

t o p o g r a p h y:
High points and the creek become points of interest to understand the topography.
Land bridges are proposed above the highways to maintain the continuity of the park and to display the highways like a post-modern show.

p r o g r a m a t i c   n o d e s:
Pavilions set along the creeks edge. Light weight structures nestled into the natural vegetation. Cultural facilities as incorporated throughout the site: open air cinema, library, sports halls, local research centre, observatory

i n d i g e n o u s   v e g e t a t i o n
a r c h e o l o g i c a l   s i t e s:
Existing significant vegetation regenerated and intensified.
Potential archaeological site displayed.

p e d e s t r i a n   n e t w o r k:
A pathway along the creeks becomes the spine for the park that allows all parts of the park to be accessed. Pathways slice through the site. Generated from the existing street pattern, they connect the neighbouring suburbs with the river system.
A secondary network is created between the paths and incorporated into the thematic gardens.

t h e m a t i c   g a r d e n s:
The remaining landscape is proposed to be various gardens based on themes such as: growers market, land art, sports, aromatic gardens, horticultural, sustainable energies, geological gardens, sculpture gardens...
