RECYCLED TOWNHOUSE
Brief: Design Competition - Innovative and low cost extension of a townhouse
Location: Le Mans, France
Organised by: CAUE de la Sarthe
Stage: Concept design
Date: 2005

Material :
The reappropriation of the molded PVC or wood palettes forms the central dimensional module for this project. As a very economical alternative, the palette is the basis for a humble but meaningful architecture. It has multiple uses: external paneling, decking, sliding window shutters, doors, sun shade. The natural treatment of the wood has minimal ecological impact.

Site / Brief:
The land has been divided into two spaces to maximize the length of the site (35m) and to create a third, ‘in-between’, space which links the existing house with the two new elements of the extension:
- A new living area, which use is purposefully ambiguous, is connected to the existing house and can be adapted according to different needs (kitchen, dining room, reading room, garden or recreational area).
- An independent studio.

Densification:
By replication and multiplication of the houses and the addition of a back lane, a new streetscape is created.

Landscape:
A ‘Land Art’ inspired garden with minimalist installations is organised by the seasonal colour variation of plants and vegetables.
